Weld a Famous Name

Sun 28th Jun 2009, 16:00

The Woodies D.I.Y Celebration Stakes (Listed Race) saw an impressive winner in the Dermot Weld trained Famous Name when winning by an easy 5 lengths under Pat Smullen making it a double on the day for the jockey.

Winning trainer Weld said afterwards, “That was an exceptional performance. When he’s good he’s very good and he loves an ease in the ground. He doesn’t like extremes in the ground. He has been placed 9 times in Group Races and he was a very unlukcy loser in the French Derby last year from a bad draw and was only beaten by a head.”

Weld also revealed, “It’s a distinct possibility that he might go for the Airlington Million at Airlington Park in Chicago later in the Summer.”

Smullen’s earlier winner came aboard the Kevin Ryan Benbaun when winning the Dubai Duty Free Sapphire Stakes.
