Review listowel 16th Sep

Fri 16th Sep 2016, 18:20

Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen have enjoyed an excellent Harvest Festival at Listowel and teamed up successfully once more with Zafayan in the Guinness Handicap.

Smullen was allowed an uncontested lead on the 7-2 chance and with his stamina for further proven, he was always going to take some pegging back.

Smullen kicked on straightening up and although Total Demolition tried to run him down, his effort was in vain, with Zafayan passing the post a length and a quarter to the good.< Canary Row (7-1) sprouted wings to get up in the dying strides of the Bank Of Ireland Handicap.< Tribal Path battled hard in front and his efforts looked set to be rewarded but he was swallowed up first by The Moore Factor and then Canary Row lunged last of all to get the verdict by head.< Dew Line backed up Wednesday's triumph over a mile and a furlong by successfully defying a penalty in the mile-and-a-half John & Terry Moriarty Memorial Handicap.

The 3-1 favourite set sail for home just inside the final quarter-mile and held the challenge of Theos Well by half a length.< Kylecrue was another to register his second triumph of the week, making all in the Southampton Goodwill Chase.

Sunday's scorer was being tackled by stable companion Draycott Place when that one parted company with Donagh Meyler two out and it was left to Pumbaa to chase the 2-1 winner home, four lengths in arrears.

Meyler was stood down and missed the ride on Garri Rua (11-4 favourite) who supplemented Thursday's win here in the John Francis Handicap Hurdle to give Kylecrue's jockey Danny Mullins a double.< Electric Concorde justified 10-11 favouritism in the John J. Galvin Maiden Hurdle, while Lakemilan took the Listowel Printing Works EBF Mares (Pro/Am) Flat Race.< Countess Guiccioli a 40-1 outsider, left it late but nailed Gifted Lady on the line in the Old Castle Median Auction Maiden.
