Goulanes showed the potential to make a useful staying chaser when winning on his British debut over hurdles at Newbury.

He was sent off at 20-1 for the Better Prices On Betfair Mobile Maiden Hurdle despite decent point-to-pointing form and his place in the top stable of David Pipe.

It did not look that encouraging for much of the way with Tom Scudamore flat to the boards, but he picked up the bridle along the stands' rail to pip 7-4 favourite Seven Woods on the line.

"I'm surprised about his price," said Pipe.

"He's not the quickest but he keeps galloping. We were going to run him in the Albert Bartlett but he was balloted out, and he's a three-mile chaser in the making."
