The Stewards interviewed R.P. Whelan, rider of Opal Tiara, concerning his use of the whip in this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and also from Dr.Lynn Hillyer, Senior turf club veterinary officer. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of Regulation 10.3(e) and (f), in that he hit the horse with excessive force and in an area other than on the hind quarters or down the shoulder and having considered his clean record, cautioned him regarding his future responsibilities in this regard.
