The Punchestown Festival finishes off in now customary fashion with the 28th running of the Charity Race in aid of the Kidney Research Fund.

A total of €1.4 million has been raised in the past through this race for the charity, and a new renal unit to be opened at Temple Street Childrens Hospital this autumn is the latest beneficiary of the fundraising.

A maximum field of 24 runners go to post at 6.40pm, and all the riders have raised €1,250 in order to take part.

The charity race was the brainchild of local butcher James Nolan, who himself received a kidney transplant 30 years ago and remains a leading organiser of the event.

Sheikh Fahad Al Thani is among the riders in today’s 1m7f race.
