The second afternoon of Royal Ascot is headlined by the Prince Of Wales's Stakes, a mile-and-a-quarter Group 1 event for four-year-olds and up.

This year's field is set to be headlined by the 2024 Irish Derby winner Los Angeles and last season's Qipco Champion Stakes hero Anmaat as they go head-to-head for a third time.

We're taking a look at some of the key trends that might help pick the winner of Royal Ascot's feature race on day two.

Key Prince Of Wales's Stakes Trends

  • Only three horses have won the race twice, the most recent being Muhtarram in 1994 & 1995

  • Aidan O'Brien & John Gosden have been responsible for five of the last eight winners

  • No six-year-old has won since So You Think in 2012

  • Only three of the last 12 favourites have won, though 10 of the previous 12 were in the top three in the betting

  • Eight of the last 12 winners had run before at Ascot, while eight had also registered at least one win in the season already

  • Only five of the last 35 winners did not start in the first four in the betting
  • At the time of writing, there are four Group 1 winners amongst a 10-strong cast remaining in the mix for the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

Old foes Anmaat and Los Angeles were first and second in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last month, while the 2024 winner of that top-level contest — White Birch — was a luckless fourth.

The 2023 St Leger hero, Continuous completes a quartet of top level winners aiming to land this prize.

Since Byword scored in 2010, further winners of this race Free Eagle, My Dream Boat, Crystal Ocean, Poet’s Word, Lord North and Mostahdaf were all winning at the highest level for the first time but, historically, being a proven winner at Group 1 level has been a positive.

This race was upgraded to Group 1 status in 2000, since when only My Dream Boat (2016) at 16/1 has returned an SP of greater than 10/1.

That service to the front end of the betting is further embellished by the knowledge that only five of the last 35 winners did not start in the first four in the betting. 18 of the last 28 winners had won last time out before stepping out at Royal Ascot.

Aidan O'Brien has won the race five times, most recently with Auguste Rodin in 2024.

His leading contender now is Los Angeles, winner of the Tattersalls Gold Cup last month when rallying to deny Anmaat, last season's Champion Stakes winner here at Ascot.

Should the Owen Burrows-trained Shadwell runner turn that defeat around and score, he'd become the first seven-year-old to win this contest since it became a graded race in 1971.

Two of the last 10 winners were having their first run of the season, though all of the remaining contenders in 2025 have been sighted at least once on the racetrack this spring.

Three fillies have won the Prince Of Wales's Stakes. They are Ouija Board (2006), The Fugue (2014) and Love (2021).

Andrew Balding 's See The Fire winner of the Middleton Stakes at York last month, is the only remaining contender for the fairer sex. She was a three-length third behind Anmaat in the Champion Stakes over course and distance on soft ground in October.
