Exciting Prince Of Wales’s Stakes awaits at Royal Ascot

Day two of Royal Ascot provides us with another quality-packed seven-race card and the Group 1 highlight of the day is the prestigious Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.
Run over 1m2f, no horse older than five has won the race in the last 10 years. That means progressive horses have the edge and six of the last 10 winners were four. Five of the runners fit the age profile so it should be a fascinating race.
A field of nine has been declared so our expert has gone through the race and picked out two strong fancies, including a fascinating French raider who could be of interest.

Formscan - A high-class renewal is likely to be headed by Los Angeles, who recorded his third Group 1 success when defeating ANMAAT (second) in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last month. Typically, Aidan O'Brien is no stranger to success in this race but, although respected, Owen Burrows' talented seven-year-old can turn the tables. The son of Awtaad was seemingly going best of all two furlongs from home that day and if stepping forward from that seasonal return, he could add further success to an already stellar CV. Middleton winner See The Fire was supplemented for 70,000 pounds and is interesting receiving the fillies' allowance, while Prix Ganay runner-up Map Of Stars and the progressive Ombudsman add further spice to the race.

A competitive and open renewal
There’s more than £1,000,000 in prize money on offer here and without an obvious winner, the race is there for the taking. Aidan O’Brien’s Los Angeles heads the market and deserves his place there, after winning a Group 1 at the Curragh when last seen.
Anmaat won the Champion Stakes over course and distance back in October and finished behind Los Angeles at the Curragh last time out. Owen Burrows’ runner is entitled to improve for the run and will have a chance of doing so, but his Group 1 win came out of nowhere and he has a bit to prove.
French raider Map Of Stars looks rather interesting, having finished second to the ante-post Arc favourite last time out. John & Thady Gosden run the lightly raced Ombudsman who progressed well last season and looked badly in need of the run when third at Sandown last time out.
See The Fire was supplemented for £70,000 and she could hardly have been more impressive when winning a Group 2 at York by 12 lengths last time out. She was also third in the Champion Stakes last season and it’s entirely possible that the best is yet to come from her.
Facteur Cheval has been badly out of form for the last couple of seasons and is quite hard to fancy, whilst Certain Lad doesn’t look up to competing at this level. Royal Champion is useful in lower grades but has plenty to find here. Continuous showed some of his old zest in the Coronation Stakes when last seen but this trip won’t suit and he could be employed as a pacemaker.
Los Angeles can do the business

It’s hard to make the case that this is a vintage renewal and Aidan O’Brien’s LOS ANGELES makes the most appeal with that in mind. He has done well to win two races over 1m2f this season and perhaps has a sharper turn of foot than he appeared to as a three-year-old.
Four-year-olds have a good recent record in this race and he can win here, although the son of Camelot wants further, provided that it's a truly run race which puts emphasis on stamina. Winning the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup when last seen, he got the better of Anmaat that day.
He seems like the sort of horse that will improve physically with every start and you can all but guarantee that O’Brien will have him primed and ready to go.
Map can claim a place in the stars
Francis-Henri Graffard sends over the very smart performer MAP OF STARS for this race and he remains lightly raced enough to suggest there could be more to come. He began the season with a narrow victory in Group 3 company at Saint-Cloud, making up plenty of ground late on to do so.
This son of Sea The Stars took the step up to Group 2 level in his stride at Longchamp next time and comfortably beat the useful Horizon Dore. Just a neck behind ante-post Arc favourite Sosie in the Prix Ganay after that, a big run could well be on the cards.
