A beaten favourite on his first three starts and fitted with cheekpieces for the first time, Joga Bonito (11/4) got off the mark in Galway's day-five opener, the James's Gate Irish EBF Median Auction Maiden over seven furlongs.

Billy Lee 's mount made virtually all and was ridden clear a furlong out to beat 5/2 favourite Otherworldly by a decisive three and a half lengths.

The son of Territories, gelded since last seen at Down Royal in June, is owned by Tony Bloom and Ian McAleavy, and provided Lee with his fourth winner of race week.

"He's a nice horse and he had good form, and around here you need experience," said winning trainer Paddy Twomey.

"He probably needed to be a gelding, he wasn't a well-behaved colt. I'd say that operation has brought about improvement.

"When we gelded him, we had a few races that we thought might suit and this was the first of them. I think he's a horse that can continue to progress."
