Our Boy Boru sprang a 40/1 shock in the opener at Navan today giving both jockey Mattie Bowes and trainer John Woods a welcome winner.

Bowes was having his first ride since suffering a back injury at Cork late last month and it was also his first winner since April 2015. It was Armagh-based Woods' first winner since November 2014.

The Brian Boru gelding was prominent throughout and was ridden to challenge two from home.

He got the better of 50/1 shot Alabama Rose giving Robbie Power his first ride back after injury, on the run-in to record a length success. Tamlough Boy was sent off the well supported 8/11 favorite (7/4 in morning). He challenged two out but failed to pick up after a slight mistake there and could only finish sixth.

“It was a bit of a surprise. I train him for a local syndicate in Armagh,” said Woods afterwards.

The Tote trifecta, and unusually also the exacta, were both not won with the big priced pair filling the first two spots.
