It was a red letter day for trainer Eoin McDonagh as Attelboro gave him a first success in the apprentice handicap at Tipperary.

The Requinto gelding attracted some support in the five-furlong contest, returning a 17/2 shot having been 16/1 this morning.

Wesley Joyce, riding his fourth winner, produced his mount with a strong run inside the final furlong to lead close home for a half length victory over Poet's Pride

"That's my first winner, I did the course in March and this lad was my first runner here back in April. It is great to get off the mark,” said McDonagh.

"He always had a level of ability and in fairness to Mark Enright he has been a big help and has guided me in the right direction with him.

“Mark always said he had a bit of ability and we stuck cheek-pieces on today to help him out a bit. We were expecting a nice run.

"I'm based between Clonmel and Cahir and mostly buy and sell horses and my aunt Noleen Moloney works for the Turf Club and we work the yard between us.

“We have four or five for the track, it is building away and I'll try to keep quality with a few horses like this."
