Wood produces smart front-running performance

Sun 8th Aug 2010, 15:22

Star Wood made every post a winning one to claim the Blue Ridge Rosebank Hurdle at Downpatrick.

Davy Russell, who travelled north for the one ride, bounced the Montjeu mare out in front. Auenschutze threw down a strong challenge two out but had no more to offer in the closing stages, going down by four lengths to the 11/10 favourite .

"She'll probably go back on the Flat for a handicap. Today looked a good opportunity for her," said winning trainer Mick Fitzgerald.

"She ran very well at Galway last time and I just felt if she had been ridden to instruction she'd have finished a lot closer.

"I was hoping today might be easier for her and give her a bit of confidence."

The winner was owned by the PGC Syndicate which comprises Goresbridge brothers Pat, Gerry and Charlie Purcell.
