Wizard proves too good for Game
Secret Wizard recorded his first career success as he took the James P. Cunningham Electrical Handicap under Gary Carroll for Sheila Lavery. Mon 05th Sep
I know this is his fifth win and he’s loads of talent but you are never quite sure if he’s going to turn up on the day. His main job now is as Lady Kaya’s lead horse. He led her on a piece of work on Tuesday and I wasn’t sure what would turn up today. He can work to a much higher level of horse than he runs to on the track. Sometimes he just can’t be arsed to put it in!. You have to try and convince him that he’s running away with you and then he’ll keep going.
Ms Sheila Lavery
I think Ronan Whelan won that race — he gave the horse such a good ride,. He's got tons of talent but just doesn't always put it all in. I think he's actually better going right-handed. I said to Ronan 'jump and don't let up on him'. He did look like he put the head down and ran to the line — ish!. I'll keep him in and look at the fast-track qualifiers. His three bad runs this year have all been on soft ground and he just has to have rattly ground. He's better when he thinks he's not doing a huge amount. Even though Ronan got him out he wasn't having to chase him and still had him on the bridle. That's the way you've got to ride him.
Ms Sheila Lavery
When you have that draw here (one) - that is what Pat (Smullen) intended to do here and wanted to dictate the race from the start. You're terrified you'll get done but from Pat's body language I didn't think he ever thought he wasn't going to win. He should get in at the bottom of the Topaz (Handicap at Galway) now and the handicapper can't really kill him after that; Pat has always said he was better going right-handed. But this all pales into insignificance and, while it's great to win a race, I'd give it back as long as Ana (O'Brien) is okay. All that really matters is Ana to be honest.
Ms Sheila Lavery
He loves those up, down, roundy tracks as they seem to keep him interested. He'd two bad runs at the Curragh, while some of his best runs have been at Galway. They're his types of tracks,. Chris said he took a blow at the furlong pole so he should improve again. We'll keep looking at handicaps and more of the same.
Ms Sheila Lavery
