Sire Du Berlais emerged one of the biggest-priced winners at this year’s Cheltenham Festival when returning victorious at 33-1 in the Stayers’ Hurdle. Gordon Elliott’s remarkable stayer then shrugged off any doubters by following up in the Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree only one month later.
Today, the tenacious eleven-year-old is attempting the lofty feat of landing the treble by winning the Champion Stayers’ Hurdle at Punchestown. The last horse to win at all three meetings was Sprinter Sacre in 2013 when he completed the Champion Chase treble.

The Grade 1 feature looks highly competitive and is one of the highlights of the week with many top-class rivals re opposing. It looks like the ground has come right for Teahupoo who relishes the mud and was last seen finishing second in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. This stablemate of Sire Du Berlais can turn the tables here though, if he gets a better run through the race than he did at Prestbury Park and he comes into this off a longer break between races. Klassical Dream has won this contest for the last two years and while he disappointed at Cheltenham, this time of year at Punchestown is when he seems to thrive.
The opener is a tricky 25-runner handicap hurdle and you could easily spend hours pondering this form. A good place to start is with Gordon Elliott who won this contest back in 2018 and looks to have two with each-way chances towards the bottom of the handicap; Gordons Aura and By Your Side.
Jordan Gainford got the Punchestown Festival off to a flyer for the yard, winning the meeting’s opener so comes here full of confidence. Gainford is one win from one ride on Gordons Aura. By Your Side runs off a super light weight with Danny Gilligan taking 7lb off and he is off a rating of 114 which now looks lenient after having finished a good third at Cheltenham off 120 seven days ago.
Dinoblue is a super consistent type having won two from six this season and some of her best form is when she finished second to Impervious in a Grade 2 in December. The Willie Mullins-trained mare should be able to get the better of this field although the UK raider Douglas Talking looks to be progressive and could pose a big threat from the in-form yard of Lucinda Russell.
In the final race of the day Apple’s Of Bresil is worth a second look, the Barry Connell newcomer is well related and out of French miler Take A Chance, who incidentally won first time out. This promising type is held in high regard by connections.
