Old rivals Wonderwall and Its On The Line served up a titanic battle in the Uniquely Champion Hunters Chase at Punchestown with the former sticking his head out late on to grab the victory.
Sam Curling ’s charge, winner at Cheltenham in 2025, had failed to fire at Prestbury Park this year but had bounced back with an ‘Open’ success at Dromahane last month.
He swept to the front today after the third last but was joined over the next by Its On The Line, who was seeking a four-timer in this race.
There was nothing between the pair in the closing stages but Wonderwall just found that bit more late on for Rob James to secure a neck victory. The stewards had a look after the pair came close late on but there was no change.
It was a 25th success on the racecourse for leading amateur James, reducing his claim to 5lb.
“He’s brilliant, an unbelievable horse. It just didn’t happen for him in Cheltenham,” said Curling.
“I wanted to get another run into him before Cheltenham but they called off Lisronagh. It was kind of my fault that he wasn’t ready enough.
“He won well in Dromahane last time and Rob gave him a lovely ride there. He’s a funny old horse, he likes plenty of room and light. It probably suits him better here.
“He was great there again today. Its On The Line is a hard horse to beat but he managed it.
“They are two brilliant horses and it’s great that they keep fighting it out and coming back.
“He loves nice ground and he’ll probably go to Stratford now.”
