Royal Ascot 2025 Betting Strategy

Royal Ascot is Britain's premier Flat meeting of the season, a five-day festival of equine excellence mixed with pomp and ceremony unmatched the world over.

It is, of course, a major betting medium and punters are attracted to the superlative action on the turf.

With Royal Ascot 2025 just around the corner, we are marking your card with some prudent betting strategies and thoughts to get you through the five-day Berkshire extravaganza.

  • Check out the best betting sites for Royal Ascot
  • Form analysis over hype

Reading the form is key to Royal Ascot. There are some two-year-old races where newcomers will be turning out but, even in those contests, most will have a racecourse run behind them.

Assessing the merits of form shown on the course is much more readily preferred to believing the 'hype' surrounding some contenders. Talk is cheap, but it is proven form that speaks loudest and can go a long way to finding Royal Ascot winners.

  • Here are our Royal Ascot tips
  • Be wary of the favourites

Backing the favourites repeatedly won't result in a profitable week. Over the last five seasons, the strike-rate for favourites in Flat races at Ascot is 37% in non-handicaps and 29% in handicaps, so not much more than one-in-three, which is similar to the average across most racecourses.

The favourites in group-race company are noticeable more reliable, but it still holds true that punters must be more creative than simply following the jolly.

    Follow breeding

Breeding is the foundation on which thoroughbred racing is based, a centuries old lineage that traces back through the bloodlines.

Make sure you do some research on the breeding lines of your selection, paying particular emphasis to top sires.

    Watch for in-form trainers/jockeys

Winning at Royal Ascot isn't easy. Aidan O'Brien has more winners at this meeting (91) than anyone else but the Ballydoyle supremo has a mere 12% strike-rate from his 165 runners at Ascot in the last five seasons, with a level stakes loss of -78.78.

William Haggas (31) and John & Thady Gosden (30) have more Ascot winners than anyone in the last five years, while Charlie Appleby's strike-rate of 18% in that same timeframe is very admirable.

Ryan Moore (33) is the most successful active jockey over the last five years, with William Buick (30) and Oisin Murphy (25) also well versed in riding winners at this track.

Moore has surpassed Frankie Dettori to become the most successful active rider at Royal Ascot, trailing only Lester Piggott in the all-time standings.

Murphy rode four winners including two Group 1's, a Group 2 and the Royal Hunt Cup at last year's Royal meeting.

    Look for free bets

Shopping around is paramount for punters when it comes to Royal Ascot and our guide to the free bets is ideal for this. There are lots of enhancements when it comes to each-way terms across the five days and looking out for those extra places can be the difference between winning and losing.

Betting turnover at Royal Ascot is huge. In 2024 the Jersey Stakes, Chesham Stakes and St James's Palace Stakes were reported to be the top three races for betting turnover, while the Queen's Vase trailed in 35th spot.

Bookmakers will be scurrying to attract customers and so punters can expect an array of free bets, money back offers and price enhancements each day during Royal Ascot, making it more important than ever to shop around for the best value for money.
