Star Sports were around £350,000 down on course at Royal Ascot on day three.

The first two days belonged to the bookies but the punters struck back on day three and the independent operator Star Sports were stung.

Day three got off to the worst possible start for the bookies with odds-on favourite Charles Darwin winning the Norfolk Stakes.

The Aidan O'Brien charge was one of five favourites who won in the seven races on day three of Royal Ascot.

Flynn Goward, Managing Director at Star Sports, said: “We were down over six figures after Charles Darwin landed the Norfolk in the opener for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore, which got things off to a shaky start on day three.

“After that, the favourites kept coming, with five of the seven obliging, which saw things go from bad to worse for us on course, with a loss of around £350k at the end of the day.

“Punters just kept on filling their pockets, and with the two non-favourites coming from the powerhouses that are Coolmoore and Godolphin, it’s no surprise they didn’t go unbacked with us either.

“Day three belonged to the punters, but we’ll be back again on Friday.”

Our Royal Ascot tip for day three comes from the Commonwealth Cup where we are backing Babouche ahead of favourite Shadow Of Light.

The feature race on the penultimate day of the royal meeting is the Coronation Stakes at 4.20.
