Benkei emerged on top after a thrilling duel with Sweet Cherry in the McCabes Mitsubishi Motors Handicap at Bellewstown.

Pat Smullen allowed Benkei to hit the front three furlongs out in the 1m6f but he was tackled passing the two pole by Sweet Cherry.

There was nothing to split the pair in the closing stages with Benkei just finding a bit more close home for a head success.

The well-backed winner (4/1 this morning into 9/4 favourite) had been fourth on his last outing at Sligo just two days ago.

“That's why Pat is champion jockey. He was very good on him. It's great to get another winner,” said Rogers.

“He could go for the amateur race at Galway if it works out. He wouldn't run on soft or fast ground.

“We'll maybe look at the Cesarewitch later in the year. I think the fast pace in that would suit him.

“I thought he was beat but he battled well and he's earned his keep for a few days.”
