Mazuri Cowboy just hung on to record a shock 40/1 win in what was a dramatic running of the Lyons Of Limerick Jaguar Land Rover Hurdle.

Trained by Eoin Doyle and ridden by Martin Ferris, the eight-year-old son of Pilsudski was sent off the outsider of the five strong field, with Renneti going off the 9/10 favourite for Emmet and Willie Mullins.

As they approached the second last the ‘jolly’ travelled best as he came with his challenge.

However the odds-on shot crashed out there, leaving Mazuri Cowboy with a clear lead.

The Paul Holden owned victor tired badly on the run-in, with Real Appeal, who was sent off the 6/4 second favourite, keeping on well under Brian O’Connell, but the line came just in time Mazuri Cowboy, as he hung on to win by a neck.

Eoin Doyle said afterwards: "He was pulling himself up, he was getting lonely in front. He did the same here last year as well.

"He loves soft ground. My horses aren’t quite right at the moment and I’m just happy to get a win over the Christmas.

"Handicap Hurdles might be out for him now after that, but he can go back over fences."
