Gordon Elliott sent out a 1-2 in the Navan Shamrock Festival Maiden Hurdle but not as most punters would have envisaged as newcomer Crest upset the short-priced favourite Kashmiri Sunset

The strapping son of Kayf Tara travelled well throughout, and was produced by Jack Kennedy to challenge the 4/9 favourite in the straight.

The Gigginstown-owned gelding, a 4/1 chance, was pushed out to assert on the run-in for a three and three quarter lengths verdict.

The Elliott-trained pair stretched right away from Candlestick in third.

Stable representative Simon McGonagle said, “That’s a little bit of a surprise but it’s nice to get a surprise like that. I thought the favourite would take all the beating.

“There should be plenty of improvement in him, and better ground will help.”
