The Charles Byrnes trained Denham Sound (13/8f) gained an overdue first win at Wexford today, landing the opening Welcome To Wexford Racecourse Maiden Hurdle under jockey Mark Walsh.

Byrnes’ old ally jockey Davy Russell was unable to ride at today’s 10st7lbs weight but Walsh was an able deputy and while his mount wandered in the home straight, Walsh kept the pair in a reasonably straight line to eventually score a two and a quarter lengths win over Herminio

Afterwards Byrnes said “she was getting the allowances today but it won't be easy to place her to win another one. She has got there today anyway and that's the main thing though.

“She is leery and hopefully we will get a little mares race for her during the summer - we won't be aiming to high with her anyway."
