California Rose benefitted from a never say die ride from Conor Hoban in the first division of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Race & Stay Apprentice Handicap at Dundalk as favourite Phils Wish didn't get the rub of the green.

Backers of California Rose would have been forgiven for tearing up their tickets with the Oratoria filly scrubbed along out the back from before the halfway stage.

With two behind her into the straight, the four-year-old found full stride on the outer from over a furlong out as Phils Wish didn't get the required racing room.

In the end California Rose got up to 'nail' Atlas Peak by a short head with Phils Wish half a length back in third.

Pat Martin has care of California Rose for his father-in-law Tom Brennan and he explained: "She has to be ridden that way and I thought she'd do this last week (11th when well backed – didn't get a clear run).

"Dusty (Shane Foley) said that she wasn't in love with surface but that she was very honest so we said we'd give her one more go here.

"She was bought for fairly small money."

California Rose's dam (Asi) is an own sister to Grade 1 winner Asi Siempre who is the dam of Outstrip, winner of this year's Breeders' Cup juvenile winner for Godolphin.

The Stewards interviewed C.R. King, rider of All Silver concerning the fact that he appeared to move across before reaching the marker poles. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered evidence from the rider, in the presence of Michael Grassick, who accompanied him at the enquiry, the Stewards were of the opinion that C.R.King was in breach of Rule 211 and having considered his record, cautioned him as to his future responsibilities in this regard.
