Intyre Trail gives Fahey his first winner

Peter Fahey celebrated his first winner as a trainer when Intyre Trail got up to prevail by a short head from Annakeen in the one mile apprentice handicap at Dundalk.

The 9/1 shot looked beaten as Annakeen set sail for the winning post but Ronan Whelan got a great response from his gelding on the rail to land almost 5,000 euro in first place prize money.

Fahey said: "That was my first winner as a trainer. I rode almost 100 winners as an amateur jockey. I've only had my license for five or six months. We were hopeful he would find his form today as he won here last year. He's rated eight pounds higher on the all-weather than on the grass.

"We'll come back here again in a couple of weeks. It was great to give Ronan a winner too as he is only down the road from me in Monasterevin."

The winner was backed off-course from 12/1 to 8/1 during the day.
