John The Soldier (25/1) gained a long overdue win on his 24th career start in the jogforjockeys.ie Handicap Hurdle at Tramore today, winning for trainer Ray Hurley and jockey Ian McCarthy.

The son of Beneficial improved to lead two out before staying on well for a two and three parts of a length win over Drumlister

Afterwards Co Cork based Hurley stated “I have him since Christmas and I'm delighted the owner (John O'Donohue) gave me the chance to train him.

“He's a lovely little horse and will be campaigned for the summer now. The ground was perfect for him as it wasn't too quick and Ian gave him a lovely spin; we'll look for another handicap hurdle now but today's win gets me off the frozen list!”
