The Patrick Prendergast-trained Tonton Macoute sprang a 25/1 shock in the colts and geldings maiden at Clonmel.

11/10 favourite Stirabout took them along in the ten furlong event but was strongly pressed throughout by the eventual winner.

Declan McDonogh sent his mount on a furlong-and-a-half from home and he fought off the challenge of Prussian Eagle in the closing stages to record a three-length victory.

The winner had shown little on two previous outings, finishing last at Dundalk in March and beating only one home on his debut at Roscommon last August.

“He's a jump horse and that's why we decided to jump out and make it as he stays well. He grinds it out even on his home work,” said Prendergast.

“He ran on the polytrack the last day and Fran Berry said it was like he was running on hot coals.

“He's the type of horse that will win hurdle races.”
