Review BALLINROBE 2ND MAY

Front-running proved a popular tactic at Ballinrobe on Wednesday night.

Vision Of Grandeur set the trend when making all to land the opening 3-y-o maiden by two lengths.

Washington Poste threw down a challenge two furlongs out but couldn't peg back Dermot Weld's charge, who stayed on strongly under Pat Smullen.

An ex stable-mate claimed the older maiden in similar fashion when Nautical Design scored on her first start for David Marnane.

The well-bred daughter of Seeking The Gold kept on gamely for Fran Berry to score by half-a-length from Zum See.

The filly is out of a full-sister to Dance Design and was bought at Goffs sales in February by the trainer's brother Con.

'She's been training well and Fran gave her a super ride from the front. Hopefully the handicapper won't be too hard on her and she'll probably go handicapping over the summer,' said Marnane.

Ruby Walsh was seen at his best when getting For A Song home in the beginners chase.

The Leslie Young-trained gelding was at the head of affairs throughout but needed strong riding from Walsh to see off the late challenges of Clonard and then Strand Line.

'He jumped super. He didn't have anything his own way and wasn't let dictate the pace. We may let him out now and go for a novice race at Galway,' said Young.

Adrian Maguire was full of praise for Davy Russell after he produced Glencree Spirit to lead at the second last and claim the handicap chase.

'Davy gave her a great ride. She wasn't wearing the cheek pieces for no reason. He squeezed her when she needed it and didn't bully her,' said Maguire.

Russell completed a quick double when Middlemarch led over the last to claim the Roundfort Stores Hurdle for Pat Fahy.

Cnoc Rua sprang a 'pleasant surprise' for Timmy Doyle when getting up inside the final furlong to edge out well-backed 2/1f Smarty Socks by a neck in the Murphys Garage Headford Handicap.

The Redback gelding had recorded his only other victory at the course last season and Doyle said: 'It's horses for courses. Willie Supple said he loves this place and if we can we'll bring him back here at some stage during the year.'

Kirbybroguelantern ran out an easy winner of the bumper for father and son partnership Tom and Andrew Hogan.
