Review BALLINROBE 3RD MAY

Declan McDonogh extended his lead at the top of the Flat jockeys table when just getting the better of great rival Pat Smullen in a thrilling finish to the nine furlong handicap.

There was early drama when Cathy Gannon's mount Ditzy Chick ran very free, pulling herself to the front until jinking going past the stable area and unshipping the former champion apprentice.

She was conscious but sustained a cut on her chin and was taken to Castlebar Hospital for precautionary examination, although later reports suggested she had no serious injury.

Meanwhile Baynes Cross and Smullen proceeded to make the running and were only thwarted in the final stride as Island Sun responded inside the final furlong to McDonogh's urgings.

McDonogh is now on the 12 winner mark, two ahead of Smullen who also had to settle for the runner-up spot half-an-hour earlier aboard newcomer Reside in the nine furlong maiden.

Destiny Do Buy benefitted from a positive ride here by Willie Supple, making all and staying on gamely under pressure inside the final quarter mile to score by a length and a half.

Tommy Stack sent out his fifth winner of the campaign, and his third in juvenile company, when Varsity Blues took the six furlongs auction maiden in fine style.

Billy Lee kicked the son of Fasliyev clear off the home turn and he stretched clear to beat the staying on newcomer Million Spirits by three and a half lengths.

Robert Tyner made the long trip from Kinsale worthwhile when Another Nation justified 11/8 favouritism under Barry Geraghty in the 2m6f handicap chase.

The complexion of the race changed when leader Toran Road fell three out, leaving the favourite in front, although Geraghty maintained afterwards that he still would have won.

Tyner has the former winning point-to-pointer entered in a similar event at Killarney on Sunday but described him as 'unlikely to run'.

Geraghty doubled up on Hardwick in the following two miles winners hurdle, getting a nice run up the inside of evens favourite Middlemarch on the home turn for a 1 1/2L success.

Native House recorded a 16/1 surprise in the beginners chase, coming from well off the pace under Robert Power to lead at the last for a six lengths verdict over Rockfield Dancer.

However punters lucky enough to be on the winner had their odds halved as the 9/10 favourite The Fingersmith was withdrawn (50c in E deduction) just before the start on veterinary advice after a trace of blood was spotted.

Dual point-to-point winner Snowy Morning just got up in the final stride for Katie Walsh to pip the front-running Oscar Lyons and send favourite backers home happy.
