Review CURRAGH 1ST JUL

Michael Kinane completed his big race CV when Galileo took the Budweiser Irish Derby in impressive fashion in front of a crowd in excess of 30,000.

The Sadler's Wells colt travelled strongly on the heels of the leaders as Pugin set the pace, and Kinane produced him to challenge 1/4m out.

Aidan O'Brien's charge quickened up really well, and was eased close home to beat Morshdi by 4L, with Golan finishing strongly the same distance back in third.

'The beauty of this horse is that he makes everything look so simple', said a delighted Kinane, while joint owner Michael Tabor commented, 'The world's his oyster'.

'He can go anywhere now, with the King George, Irish Champion Stakes and the Breeders Cup Classic all possible targets', said O'Brien.

He added: 'I was never convinced that he was a mile and a half horse as he has such a high cruising speed'.

Cashmans rate Galileo a 5/1 chance for the Breeders Cup Classic behind 2/1 favourite Point Given.

O'Brien earlier recorded another milestone in his illustrious career when breeding his first Group-winning colt, Railway Stakes victor Rock Of Gibraltar.

Kinane's mount was denied a clear passage in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot lastt month, but he had no such traffic problems in this Group 3 event.

The Danehill colt was up with the pace throughout, and just pushed out to beat stablecompanion Hawk Wing by 2L.

'He finished on the bridle at Ascot, and would have done more work at home. He will have a little rest, and could be a Dewhurst horse. Hopefully he will stay a mile next year', said O'Brien.

Bach completed a memorable day for O'Brien and Kinane when taking the Listed Celebration Stakes, leading well over a furlong out to beat Maumee by 1 1/2L.

'He is lucky to be alive after breaking his pelvis last year, and bled into his lungs. He may run next in the Eclipse along with Black Minnaloushe' said O'Brien.

Co Down rider Fergus Sweeney (23) was successful aboard his first mount at the Curragh when Repertory showed good speed throughout to land the opening Listed race sprint.

Patriot Games was confidently ridden by Fran Berry in the 2m handicap, leading inside the final furlong and driven out to beat Rapid Deployment by 3/4L.

The runner-up was later demoted behind sixth placed Palacio after the stewards found that John Egan's mount had caused interference a furlong out.

Egan was also given a three day suspension (July 11-13) for careless riding.

Avorado (Kevin Manning) led a furlong out to take the Scurry Handicap, while Osprey Ridge was given a polished ride by apprentice Pat Cosgrave to beat Derivative by a head in the 1m handicap.

Kevin Prendergast later doubled up when Khetaam just held on under Declan McDonogh in an exciting three-way photo to the 12f handicap.
