Review CURRAGH 26TH MAY

Gossamer put a lack-lustre display at Newmarket behind her when impressively landing the Entenmann's Irish 1,000 Guineas in front of 10,700 racegoers.

Jamie Spencer's mount was always close to the pace, travelling strongly to lead a furlong out before quickening clear to beat Quarter Moon by 4 1/2L.

Aidan O'Brien, fresh from saddling a 1-2-3 in the 2,000 Guineas here yesterday, sent out five of the first seven home with Starbourne another 1L adrift in third.

'She's something else, and has the most wonderful temperment,' said winning trainer Luca Cumani.

He added, 'She is not as inconvenienced by soft ground as much as the others, but I have always maintained that she handles fast ground just as well. Hopefully she will get the chance to prove that in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.'

Declan McDonogh partnered his first Group 1 winner aboard Rebelline in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, heading the front-running Bach inside the final furlong to score by 2L.

The 8/11 favourite Nayef held every chance a further 2 1/2L back in third.

'She's very good in that (soft) ground. The plan now is to give her a break before the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe,' said trainer Kevin Prendergast.

McDonogh earlier successfully teamed up with his father Des in the 6f handicap, with Assigh Lady prominent throughout to beat Croga Croi by 2 1/2L.

The only sour note on the day for McDonogh was a three day suspension (June 4-6) picked up here for not conforming to the rules regarding marker poles at the start.

The Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot is the target for Pakhoes after the Dermot Weld-trained colt opened his account in the 6f 2yo maiden.

'He's a tough, laid-back colt, and is entitled to run in the Coventry,' said Weld after the son of College Chapel headed Lawood inside the final furlong to score by 1 1/2L under Pat Smullen.

Smuggler's Song made all for Fran Berry in the Listed Silver Stakes, driven out to hold off Twentytwoandchange by 1L as Zafaraniya stayed on best of all the same distance away in third.

Egyptian (7/1-5/1f) struck the front a furlong out under John Murtagh to take the 1m handicap, while Evening Scent (Tadhg O'Shea) collared Heezapistol in the straight to take the 12f handicap.

There were 53 lucky winners of the E41,660 jackpot pool, with each receiving a dividend of E589.
