Review CURRAGH 29TH JUN

Alamshar proved to be the brilliant winner of the Budweiser Irish Derby in one of the most memorable races at seen The Curragh in recent years.

Johnny Murtagh's mount fought out a fantastic battle with the French trained Dalakhani in the final two furlongs after pacemakers Handel and High Country had set a blistering early gallop.

The win was the fifth in the race for the Aga Khan who owned both Alamshar and runner-up Dalakhani, with Alamshar running in the colours of the Aga Khan's grandfather. The 31,136 people in attendance cheered home the John Oxx trained winner with the winning rider claiming his second Irish Derby win.

Murtagh was completing a double after earlier partnering English raider Spanish Ace to win the King Of Beers Listed Stakes while Oxx also recorded a double when Zimbabwe won the concluding Waterford Crystal Handicap under seven pound claimer Jamie Moriarty.

Mick Kinane won the Group 2 Railway Stakes on Antonius Pius who held the challenge of English raider Spanish Ace by half a length. Aidan O'Brien's charge confirmed the promise he showed when winning on his debut in Gowran Park last month and will now be strongly fancied for Classic success next year.

O'Brien and Kinane later completed a double when Mingun landed the Budweiser Celebration Listed Stakes.

Jockey Kevin Manning brought eventual winner Avorado from near last to first in the six furlong John Roarty Memorial Scurry Handicap. The 4/1 favourite finished strongly and defeated Cool Cousin by a neck, with Manning only using his whip close home.

Latino Magic landed the E80,000 Budweiser Guinness Handicap for trainer Robbie Osborne and was providing jockey Robbie Burke with his second winner since returning to Ireland after a spell in Macau.
