Frozen Fire was produced with a devastating late run by Seamus Heffernan to land the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh for the Aidan O'Brien team.

But there was plenty of controversy thanks to stablemate Alessandro Volta's wayward path through the final furlong, before the 16-1 winner swooped down the outside to score by two lengths.

Casual Conquest ran on strongly to take second, with Alessandro Volta next followed by the unlucky Tartan Bearer, but the stewards reversed the placings of the third and fourth.

Curtain Call was in the process of running a big race before he was stopped in his tracks as Alessandro Volta veered sharply left in the final furlong, and Tartan Bearer was done no favours either.

It was a second consecutive Irish Derby success for Heffernan, who rode Soldier Of Fortune to victory for Ballydoyle last season.

O'Brien improved on an already amazing One 51 Railway Stakes record when Mastercraftsman came out best in a thrilling finish.

The 8-11 favourite tracked Coventry Stakes second Intense Focus as Alhaban led, and the trio settled down for a rare battle through the final furlong.

Intense Focus cracked close home, but Alhaban ran on with great gusto and Mastercraftsman was all out to get the better of him under Johnny Murtagh, taking the Group Two juvenile event by a short head.

Adrian Nicholls landed the Northumberland Plate on the Tony Martin-trained Arc Bleu on Saturday and added another big prize when Tax Free captured the William Fry Sapphire Stakes.

The Dandy Nicholls-trained gelding (4-1), a winner at Naas last time, raced in third for much of the way as Desert Lord took them along.

Course specialist Benbaun went on a furlong out, but Nicholls had the move covered and Tax Free got on top 50 yards out to take the Group Three contest by a length and a quarter.

Lisvale battled on bravely to take the Woodies DIY Celebration Stakes under Wayne Lordan.
