Review DOWNPATRICK 14TH NOV

The Australia v Ireland jump jockeys challenge took a dramatic turn with the away team winning both races to move into a ten points lead (52-42).

Gavin Bedggood set the ball rolling for the Aussie's on Lotionandpotions in the handicap hurdle, drawing clear on the run-in for a 14L verdict over his compatriot Steve Pateman on Lady Usk.

The 21-year-old Melbourne rider said afterwards, 'This has given me a great thrill and I felt we would win from a long way out.'

Pateman went one better in the handicap chase as the always prominent Maree Prince stretched clear on the downhill run after three out and kept up the gallop to beat Moody Lad by 18L.

Pateman was also successful for the Australian team at Thurles two years ago and is the leading rider in Victoria.

The series now moves on to Clonmel tomorrow and finishes up at Punchestown on Saturday.

Lotionandpotions' trainer Philip Rothwell later completed a 62/1 double in the 2m2f beginners chase where Another Notice took advantage of the last fence fall of Florrie's Boy to beat Carmens Ford by 10L.

The David Casey-ridden Hotterthanjuly gained an unlikely victory in the opening two and three quarter miles maiden hurdle.

The Oscar gelding appeared to have no chance in fifth at the final flight as Deramore Rythm went clear but really got into gear on the run-in, finishing with such effect that he had 2L to spare at the line.

'The step up in trip obviously helped a lot and he runs best when dropped out. David gave him a great ride and we'll probably go for a winners of one next,' said trainer Charlie Swan.

Seven Disciples was all the rage in the 2m2f maiden hurdle but the 8/13 favourite could find no extra as jumping newcomer Princess Nicole led soon after the last for David Evans to score by 4 1/2L.

The Alhaarth filly sports the all yellow silks of Ken Campbell but the Belfastman, who bought the colours at a HRI auction for 90,000 euro, was held up in traffic and just missed the victory.

Son Of Mary proved another winner for Noel Meade and Paul Carberry in the 2m7f beginners chase, while Dashing Romeo ended a frustrating sequence of placings in the bumper.
