Review GALWAY 30TH OCT

Arteea had little more than an exercise canter as he recorded an effortless win from sole remaining rival Top Strategy in the Tote Exacta Ballybrit Novice Chase.

Andrew McNamara's mount was left in front after Kahuna fell at the first fence, and was already set for victory when Calorando also exited at the second last.

The Michael Hourigan-trained gelding came home an impressive 15 lengths clear of Top Strategy in the four-runner Grade 3 contest to collect over 35K in prize-money.

'It was made easy for him but, for a horse that doesn't like being in front, he jumped super. This is not the easiest place in the world to jump around,' said a delighted Hourigan afterwards.

He added, 'He won the Land Rover Bumper last year and was a sick horse like most of mine earlier this year. He will stick to novices and go for the better races. The ground doesn't seem to matter to him.'

The Galway City Tribune Handicap Hurdle proved a good result for Fine Gael as the Alan Donoghue-ridden On Your Way recorded a 'landslide victory'.

The Liz Doyle-trained gelding is owned by the On Your Side Syndicate, comprising 24 prominent members of the party, and led before two out to beat Heronstown by 13L.

'I only decided to run after the original top-weight came out and he just got into the handicap proper,' said the successful trainer, a daughter of MEP Avril Doyle.

Timber Scorpion provided trainer Pat Hughes, on crutches as he recovers from a hip-replacement operation, with a welcome tonic in the 3YO maiden hurdle.

Joey Elliott seized the initiative by driving the gelding clear before two out to beat Storm Becks by four lengths.

'He disappointed us a few times on fast ground and probably needs that cut in the ground,' said Hughes.

Pat Martin has found the key to Gilberto in recent weeks and the 4yo gelding followed up his Tramore claimer win by landing the 12f handicap.

The 7/1 shot was a chance ride for Chris Geoghegan, replacing Padraig Beggy who was attending a christening, and stayed on gamely to overhaul Pelagias Star inside the final 100 yards.

'He won over 7f's at Leopardstown last year and we campaigned him over that type of distance which was probably wrong. He stays well, loves cut in the ground and could make a nice horse next year,' said Martin.

Niall McCullagh has enjoyed a good time in recent weeks and he partnered the always prominent Bay Boy to a neck verdict over Grisham in the 7f handicap.

'He's a tough horse and we may give him a break now before going hurdling,' said trainer Andrew Oliver after the 3yo's third outing in the space of eight days.

Nevada Range, caught in the closing stages at Fairyhouse last time, attacked late himself under Seamus Heffernan to land the 2yo auction race.

The Joe Crowley-trained juvenile was produced with a well-timed challenge inside the final furlong to beat Sweet Petite by a length.

Berkeley House edged clear in the straight under Lenny Flynn to take the bumper, while the attendance of 4,325 was up over 400 on the same day last year.
