Review KILLARNEY 20-JUL-2000

Charlie Swan dominated proceedings on the final day of the very successful four day Festival when on the mark in his dual roles of jockey and trainer.

The former champion partnered a 22/1 double in the opening two events aboard Leopard Rock and Effusive.

The ground was heavily watered near the inside rail (officially good), and Swan kept both mounts wide throughout in search of much faster conditions.

Leopard Rock (6/4-15/8) led at halfway in the 2m1f novice hurdle, and stretched clear from two out to beat the staying on Lake Millstatt by 6L.

Effusive took the 2m1f handicap hurdle in great style, travelling strongly throughout and sent on after two out to beat Miss Information by a facile 5 1/2L.

The Cloughjordan based trainer captured the featured Dawn Milk Run Handicap

for amateur riders with Aboriginal.

The 8yo was prominent throughout, and kept on well inside the final 1/4m for John O'Meara to beat Goldenhalo by 1L.

'He has suffered alot of injuries over the years, including a cracked pelvis twice,' said Swan, who nominated the GPT Handicap at Galway as a likely target.

Austin Leahy, who saddled an incredible 6 seconds here during the week, gained some compensation when At His Best swooped late under Fran Berry in the 1m handicap.

'That numbs the pain a bit,' said the Limerick handler, whose charge also dead-heated here on Tuesday with Barr Na Sraide.

Curragh trainer Frank Ennis, whose two previous wins this year were gained in Listed events, was again on the mark with Alonsa in the 1m3f maiden.

Wayne Lordan produced the well-bred filly (dam is half-sister to Aliysa) from off the pace, leading inside the final furlong to beat Lucky Bet by 3/4L.

Garryduff Breeze, who is in foal to Dr Massini, was patiently ridden by Paul Carberry to readily justify favouritism in the 2m6f handicap hurdle (division 2).

The Frances Crowley trained mare led between the final two flights to beat Tonitoni by an eased down 3L but is unlikely to reappear again at Kilbeggan tomorrow.

James Mansell recorded his third win in the saddle when Tower Project edged out Devilment close home to land division 1 of the 2m6f handicap hurdle.

Danaeve made virtually all under Philip Dempsey to take the bumper.
