Review LEOPARDSTOWN 27TH JUN

The penultimate evening meeting at Leopardstown attracted another big crowd with trainer Ger Lyons and Wayne Smith coming away with a 109/1 double via Caffrey's Gold and Balizac.

Punters who made note of the low draw advantage in the opener got it right in the next when Caffrey's Gold (8/1) made every yard a winning one out of stall 1 for Wayne Smith to defeat warm favourite Marko Jadeo (7/2-11/4f).

The Smith/Lyons alliance followed up later when Balizac just held the late surge of Carlesimo by a rapidly diminishing minimum margin in the 9f handicap to provide 7 lucky winners of the Jackpot with #1,607.10 each.

'This horse has bad legs and I was protecting him. He ran a good race on the sand at Laytown and I wanted to run him on fast ground as he goes well on it. I'm delighted,' said Lyons after his 109/1 brace with Balizac.

Dermot Weld introduced a winning juvenile in the shape of the Moyglare Stud Farm-owned Wise Words (5/4-6/4f), who lead into the straight and kept on well for Pat Smullen to defeat market rival Casa Que Canta (2/1-3/1-11/4) by 3/4L.

'A workmanlike performance like his sire Definite Article,' remarked Dermot Weld afterwards.

Kalamunda (3/1-2/1f) trained by Charles O'Brien for his father Vincent, justified strong support in the ring to easily land the 7f maiden for Mick Kinane.

'She was bred by myself which is always nice and she wants ground as firm as possible. The heavens opened at Roscommon on her debut (3rd) which didn't help but the man on board was impressed although we don't know what was behind her,' said Charles O'Brien.

Michael Grassick's string have hit form in recent weeks and the Curragh trainer struck again in the 9f maiden when newcomer Translucid (6/1)and Eddie Ahern stayed on well in the straight to shrug off Standing Applause.

'This colt has only come right and I thought greenness might beat him today. He'll go for a winners of one and we'll take it from there,' said Grassick.

The low draw for the opening 17-runner Apprentice Handicap proved profitable for those drawn near the stands rail as the first five home came out of stalls 3,4,2,6, and 5 respectively headed by Tom McCourt's 14/1 shot Delvin Flyer.

The layers finished the evening on a winning note when 14/1 chance Ojay and Roger Loughran quickened up well after the furlong pole to win the 1m6f QR Maiden for Dessie Hughes.
