Review LISTOWEL 24TH SEP

The feature event on the final day of the Listowel festival produced a stylish winner as Adamant Approach cruised to victory in the Dawn Milk Handicap Chase.

Waltons Mountain attempted to make all, but was joined by Adamant Approach after he made a mistake four out.

Ruby Walsh sent the 7/4f on before the straight and he asserted from the second last, going on for an easy 12-length victory.

'He's a superstar,' said Jackie Mullins, wife of winning trainer Willie. 'Ruby said the ground doesn't seem to bother him anymore and that he is settling much better now.'

Paul Carberry rounded off the week in good style, partnering a double courtesy of Ballyagran and Whenever Wherever.

Ballyagran made a promising debut over fences when repelling the late surge of Chicago Vic by half-a-length in the Dawn Pure Orange Juice Beginners Chase.

'He jumped great. It was so disappointing last year as I thought he was going to be a real good horse and ran him in all the good races,' said winning trainer Noel Meade.

'I don't know if there was something wrong with him but he didn't jump hurdles very well - kicked them out of his road. He was very accurate there and could go for a winners of one now.'

Whenever Wherever proved a willing partner for Carberry in the Low Low EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle.

The Tom Taaffe-trained mare got the better of front-runner Carmens Ford at the last and kept on strongly to repel that rival's renewed challenge by a head despite Carberry losing his whip inside the final furlong.

Aces Or Better, second here on Friday, opened his account over timber when running out a cosy length winner of the Kerry Maid Maiden Hurdle.

The 1/1f was at the head of affairs throughout and edged ahead from rival Irish Nation before two out. JP Magnier didn't need to get too serious with his mount to secure victory.

'He's a chaser down the road and I'm delighted with him. I'll give him a break now and produced him again in the spring,' said trainer Mags Mullins.

The Dawn Omega Milk Handicap produced a terrific finish with Master Massini and Supreme Tan duelling it out down the straight.

The pair were locked together at the last but Master Massini found that bit extra close home for Philip Carberry to get up by half a length.

Eric McNamara, trainer of Supreme Tan, also saddled the third and fourth in the race. He didn't have too long to wait for a winner as Pearl's A Singer sprang a 16/1 shock in the Kerry Spring Water Hurdle.

2/5f Jazz Messenger looked a different class on paper but failed to run anywhere near his rating, coming under pressure two out.

Undergraduate and Pearl's A Singer fought the finish with the mare sticking her head out close home for a narrow victory.

'Listowel was always the plan but I never thought for a second that she would beat Jazz Messenger - I thought he was a certainty,' said McNamara.
