Review ROSCOMMON 4TH SEP

Joanna Morgan and Davy Russell teamed up to record a double at a rain lashed Roscommon on Monday night with in-form pair Portant Fella and Jawad.

Portant Fella completed a hat-trick when successfully switching back to fences in the Boyle Handicap Chase.

The gelding, twice a winner over hurdles recently, showed he is equally adept over the larger obstacles when running out a comfortable seven length winner.

Irish Stream was left in the lead when Room To Room Gold crashed out at the fourth last and Portant Fella soon moved up to challenge. Russell sent his mount on before two out and he survived a blunder at the last to come home in front of Kit Carson.

'It was probably not ideal to be in front that long,' revealed Russell afterwards. 'He got a bit close at the last but was clever at the same time.'

Jawad was making it four in a row when running out a cosy nine-length winner of the Lecarrow Handicap Hurdle. He hit the front before the last and his task was made easier by the fall of Erins Princess .

'He's a grand horse and on the up,' said Russell. 'I had the other one covered but it obviously wouldn't have been nine lengths.' The winning jockey also reported that Morgan was busy at the sales.

The Athleague Novice Hurdle looked likely to develop into a duel between Line Ball and Davenport Democrat and so it proved.

The front running Davenport Democrat was pressed by Line Ball entering the straight and briefly relinquished the lead two out but fought doggedly for Ruby Walsh to prevail by a length-and-a-three quarters from the well backed 4/6f.

'He battled well,' said Walsh. 'The ground is not that soft, they are just taking the top off it - it's summer soft.'

Boulavogue was off the bridle down the back straight in the Ballyleague Maiden but showed great resolution to lead turning for home and score by three-and-a-half length from Rhythm 'N' Blues.

The Turtle Island gelding's future lies over hurdles according to trainer Charlie Swan: 'He jumps really well and has been schooling since March. He could have another run on the Flat.'

Three battled it out in a terrific finish to the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden.

The Aga Khan newcomer Saricana found a little bit extra close home to get up by a short-head from fellow debutant Mootamaress with long-time leader Kingsdale Orion the same distance back in third.

The Elphin Handicap produced another tight finish with Star Wood clinging on by a head from the fast finishing Tango Foxtrot.

Wicklow Wanderer provided Caroline Woods with her first winner in the saddle when getting up close home in the bumper.

Her father Lindsay Woods revealed afterwards that filly was the only horse he has in training. She could head to Perth now for a hurdle race.
