Review SLIGO 4TH AUG

Brogue Lanterns made all to land a massive on-course gamble in convincing style at Sligo last night.

Tom Hogan's filly was backed from 16/1 into 11/2 in the ring and the bookmakers knew their fate before the turn as Robbie Burke's mount stretched clear for a comfortable two-length victory over Shadow Ash.

'She went for a visit into the grandstand at Galway or else she would have been placed. She came out of the race well and when she got in here we decided to let her take her chance,' explained Hogan regarding the confidence behind the winner.

Pat Hughes revealed after the Derrinstown Stud Handicap that he had bought winner Monologue purely on sentiment as the gelding shares his name with a greyhound owned by his father in the 1930s.

'My father had a great greyhound by the same name, which won the first Irish Derby in 1932. When I saw the name I just had to buy him,' said Hughes.

The Dennys Hurdle is a long-term target for Riverboatman who is set to go over hurdles following his success in the John Perry Maiden.

Hegarty carried the JP McManus colours to an all-the-way victory in the Martin Reilly Motors BMW Maiden Hurdle while Rodybolands was a cosy winner of the Anglo Irish Bankcorp Handicap Hurdle under Ruby Walsh.
