Review TRALEE 25TH AUG

Euro Leader justified favouritism in the featured Denny Gold Medal Handicap Chase with a commanding performance, although punters did have to survive a nasty scare at the third last.

Ruby Walsh sat tight as the 7/2 chance ploughed through the fence before the straight but the gelding was soon back on the bridle and appeared to have plenty in hand when beating Ursumman by 4L.

'He's making progress with his jumping and we'll enter him for the Kerry National. I have my doubts about him getting the trip but the prize-money is tempting,' said trainer Willie Mullins.

Andrew Lynch was taken to hospital for x-rays on his arm after Splendour took a heavy fall when still prominent five out.

The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Red Damson followed up his successful raid on Bellewstown last week by taking the Denny Havasnack amateurs race in fine style.

The 5/4 favourite was sent to the front before the straight by Peter Fahey and galloped on strongly up the straight to beat Le Leopard by a length and a half.

'We didn't really know how he would handle the soft ground and I would say he will head back home now,' said Prescott's assistant Alyson West, who thanked Patrick Prendergast for stabling the gelding over the past week.

Robert Power deputised for the sidelined Paul Carberry aboard Battledress who made it two from two over hurdles in the Lee Strand 3YO Hurdle.

Ken Condon's charge quickened up nicely on the run-in to shrug off the challenge of Bowerman by four lengths.

Touch Of Love put previous injury problems behind him when recording a shock 20/1 (paid over 36/1 on the Tote) victory in the Grand Hotel Handicap Chase.

Robbie Moran's mount headed Wrapitup at the final fence and stayed on well on the short run-in to score by two lengths with 7/4 favourite Jirlan a further six lengths adrift in third.

'He was fourth to Say Again in the Galway Hurdle for Edward O'Grady but was then off the track for two years with leg trouble. Hopefully he will be sound after this,' said trainer Leslie Young.

The Con Collins stable has shown a welcome return to form in recent weeks, and the Curragh trainer teamed up with Pat Shanahan for a 41/1 double with Spanish Blue and Star Of Russia.

The ground was softer after a number of heavy showers and they were well strung out in the mile juvenile auction maiden, where Spanish Blue kept on best to beat The Stunner by 1 1/2L.

'He didn't handle the bends very well but has come on from his first run at Tipperary last week,' said Tracey Collins, representing her father Con.

Star Of Russia was produced between horses by Shanahan to lead inside the final furlong of the Giles Auctioneers Handicap for a length and a half verdict over Ciaras Luck.

'She's an improving filly and we'll try to find a similar handicap for her,' commented Tracey Collins afterwards.

Michael Flannery made the long trek, by land and sea, from Ballinrobe worthwhile when saddling Water Side to take the Timmy Houlihan Memorial Handicap.

The six-year-old gelding stretched clear in the closing stages of the the mile event for Tadhg O'Shea to beat La Commara by three and a half lengths.

'It took over four hours to get here including the ferry trip across the Shannon Estuary, and I have to thank Fran Berry who told me to try cheek-pieces instead of blinkers,' said Flannery.

'He's been a bit unlucky as things haven't really gone his way and, if he gets in, could run over hurdles at Ballinrobe on Sunday.'
