Review TRALEE 23RD AUG

The featured Guinness Gold Cup provided a thrilling three horse photo-finish, with Gift Token just getting the verdict for Pat Hughes and Fran Berry.

The lead changed hands a number of times in the straight but Berry's mount found a bit extra under pressure in the final strides to deny topweight Miltonfield by a shorthead.

However the stewards found Berry guilty of using his whip with excessive frequency in the closing stages, and suspended him for two days (Sept 1-2).

'She is very consistent, and deserved that after a number of good efforts recently in defeat,' said Hughes, who will aim her next at a 12f Curragh fillies handicap.

Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning teamed up for a 44/1 plus double with Avorado and Night Rhapsody.

Avorado upset the well-backed newcomer Sligo Bay (4/6-1/2) in the 2yo maiden, heading that rival over a furlong out for a comfortable 2L success.

Bolger launched a stinging attack on the state of the ground afterwards saying: 'The track is deplorable, and should have been presented in much better condition today.'

Night Rhapsody, fitted with blinkers for the first time, cruised to the front over a furlong out in the mile handicap to beat Silver Spray by a cosy 2 1/2L.

The old cliche 'incident packed' came to mind after Quintus (Norman Williamson) gained an unlikely victory in the novice chase.

The evens favourite appeared beaten three out behind the front-running Coq De Mirande but the latter tired in the straight, and was headed before falling at the last.

Coq De Mirande was remounted by Conor O'Dwyer to finish last of the four finishers.

Neutron looked sure to win the 3yo hurdle when moving alongside Billy Bonnie on the home turn but Paul Carberry's mount rallied well from the last to snatch the spoils.

Tom Queally continued his winning run when producing the Pat Flynn-trained Rainbow Realm to lead inside the final furlong for a 1/2L win from Northern Mill.

Barnawee Bridge made all under John O'Meara in the bumper.
