Russell moves further clear with Navan double

Davy Russell moved 22 winners clear (69-47) of Ruby Walsh at the head of the Jockeys’ Championship today at Navan when completing a double on the Charlie Swan trained Start Me Up

Russell, who was also providing owner Gigginstown House Stud with a double, was made to work hard on the winner who stated on strongly in the closing stages for a head win over Berties Dream with Carloswayback half a length behind in third, having looked the likely winner 100 yards out.

Afterwards Swan said “I have to thank the jockey (Russell) big-time there as he was brilliant on him. He has been a little bit disappointing on his last runs, can run keen but Davy switched him off today.

“He stays well but I’m not sure where we’ll go now - we’ll discuss things with Michael (O’Leary, owner).”
