Shinrock battles to success on hurdling debut

Shinrock Paddy produced a gutsy front-running performance to get off the mark over hurdles in the Punchestown Event Centre Maiden Hurdle.

Alain Cawley had to get serious with the 1/2 favourite down the straight as Gallant Light and Rick threw down strong challenges.

The Barry Connell-owned gelding got home by half a length from Gallant Light with Rick a further half length back in third.

"It's nice to get that out of the way - you're always worried about a small field," said James Nolan, brother of winning trainer Paul.

"He wants a better test of stamina. We didn't want to make to make it all today but once he gets his head in front I don't mind.

"We'll look at a novice at Cheltenham as he won there last year and it might give him a bit of experience for March.

"There is also the Barry and Sandra Kelly Hurdle at Navan (December 13th). I think he is more of a stayer. We said we'd start him over two and take it from there. What impressed me most today was his jumping."
