Top-weight in a handicap on a twisting track was a system from many years back and it reaped dividends for those who dusted it down on their way to Kilbeggan this evening.

Barry Geraghty was the jockey in the plate on The Black Russian The pair faced a serious challenge from Vinniespride over the last. Derek Fox attempted to get up on the inner, but Geraghty kept The Black Russian towards the rail and closed the door.

As the winning post came into view, Treacy Hotels Boy closed to within half a length. The front two were both backed, The Black Russian from 7/2 in the morning to an SP of 5/2 favourite and Treacy Hotels Boy from 5/1 before racing to 7/2 on the off.

Vinniespride (11/2) was another half a length down in third after running out of racing room.

The Black Russian was a previous course and distance winner.

The Stewards enquired into possible interference after the last hurdle involving The Black Russian, ridden by B.J. Geraghty, winner and Vinniespride, ridden by D.R. Fox, placed third, where it appeared Vinniespride suffered interference. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the judges' placings and took no further action.
