Despite looking beaten on the final circuit, Wrong Turn kept on strongly to win the La Na Gaeilge Handicap Chase under Ruby Walsh for Tony Martin.

The seven-year-old son of Well Chosen opened at 4/1 with Paddy Powers this morning and was well backed, opening on-course at just 7/4 and going off at that price, after touching 2/1.

Having won a point-to-point on his debut at Lemonfield in March of last year, when trained by Benjamin Daunt, he failed to show any sort of form on five track efforts since.

Running in the John Breslin colours for the first time this afternoon he was towards the rear in the early stages and was pushed along.

He made headway after the fourth last and he closed on the leaders three from home.

He was on terms at the second last, soon hitting the front and going on to score easily by eleven lengths from the John Hanlon trained Coolking (8/1 into 5/1 on-course) in second under Andrew McNamara. Kennoway who beat Wrong Turn by over twenty lengths at Cork last month, was a further three and a half lengths back in third under Andrew Lynch for Claire O’Connell.

Tony Martin said afterwards: "He only came to hand in the last month and his rider was a big help.

"He is very green and he improved a tonne from the last day. He is a big backward type.

"He is entered in Tipperary on Thursday but we will get today out of the way first. The ground wasn’t soft enough for him today."
