Wrekin smashes rivals in Gowran opener

Wrekin Rock sprang a 25/1 shock in the opening 3-Y-O maiden hurdle at Gowran Park.

Jim Gorman 's charge was making his debut over timber and overcame greenness over the last couple of flights to run out a cosy winner.

The Statue Of Liberty gelding tracked leader Mac Tigue throughout in the two-mile event before being sent on turning for home by Ben Dalton.

He had a look at the second last as he approached it in front and again wandered at the final flight but always looked in control.

11/4 favourite Canna tried to chase him down but never looked likely to get to the winner, going under by four-and-a-half lengths.

"That certainly was a little bit of a surprise," admitted Gorman.

"We always had a doubt about him getting the trip as he had been running freely over six and seven furlongs.

"We brought him to the sales but nobody wanted him. His jumping will improve as he gets more experience - he's only done two weeks schooling.

"I suppose we'll go to Leopardstown at Christmas now and see what happens."
