Bumper crowds expected for Galway Festival

Officials at Galway are expecting more than 160,000 racegoers at the seven-day festival which starts on Monday.

Around 800 horses are expected to compete at Ballybrit over 52 races with a prize fund of 1.9 million euros up for grabs.

First staged in 1869, it has been estimated the local economy benefits to the tune of 54 million euros.

A total of 70,000 meals will be served, a tonne of chips eaten, over 500 bottles of champagne will be sold and 160,000 pints drunk.

The feature races are the TheTote.com Galway Plate on Wednesday and Thursday's Guinness Galway Hurdle.

Michael Moloney, Galway's general manager said: "It's all systems go for the 2016 Galway Races Summer Festival.

"We have lots of great racing, fashion events and entertainment planned over the seven days and look forward to welcoming more than 160,000 Irish and overseas visitors to Ballybrit this week and building on our impressive 2015 numbers."
