The veteran Kavanaghs Corner gained a third career victory when staying on best in the closing stages to land the Urlingford Rated Chase at Thurles.

Henry de Bromhead's charge was sent to post a 5/1 shot in the extended two-and-a-half mile contest and was held up in the early stages by Daniel Holden.

The 11-year-old took closer order going to the third last and was one of five in with a shout at the penultimate fence.

Three jumped the last upsides as the eventual winner tackled long-time leader Western Sea and Crazyheart

Kavanaghs Corner hit the front on the run-in and despite wandering a touch late on he had plenty in hand to beat Crazyheart by two-and-three-quarter lengths.

The winning rider said:- "I rode him in Limerick and he switched off lovely and it was the same today.

“He got racing at times when horses came back to him but he jumps so well and is always making ground that you have to bide your time with him everywhere.

"He did it well and it was a great ride to get."
