Owner/trainer Pat Coffey has been named as the man who died in yesterday's accident near Portroe in County Tipperary.

It’s believed Coffey tragically lost his life when he came off the horse and trap he was on, while out with a teenage family member on the road at Killoran near the quarry at lunchtime.

Gardaí say no other vehicle was involved and the teenager is understood to have sustained only minor injuries.

It's another terrible blow for the Coffey family as the handler's nephew Patrick McCormack was taken far too young in a farming accident in January 2018.

Mr Coffey, who was in his 50s, ran Boulagloss Stables in Carrigatoher.

He enjoyed much success in the point-to-point fields and his last winner as a trainer on the track came when Barrys Jack scored at Limerick in December 2016.

Based near Nenagh, Coffey had a day to remember when Saddlers Deal and That's A Fact both triumphed for him, with Davy Russell in the plate, at Huntingdon in September 2014.
