Sizing Coal comes from a great family and he cost Alan Potts 340,000 Euros at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby National Hunt Sale in June 2011. No pressure then when the Presenting five-year-old began his racing life at Kilfeacle last Sunday.
Jim Dreaper's charge put in a most satisfactory performance under Jamie Flynn but he failed by three lengths to match Eoin Griffin's Azorian.
Dreaper had said of Sizing Coal in the Irish Field back in March 2012: "He had a racecourse school over fences a few weeks ago and went well. He'll start off in a point-to-point but we might wait until later on in the year. He is a fine big chasing type of horse and he has the world of jumping done."
Azorian, another debutante, was expected to do the business last Sunday, so you can be pretty sure Jamie Codd's (later doubled-up on Bothair Clei) mount has a good future ahead of him. Griffin's sister Claire McAuley owns the victorious Westerner gelding and he was bred by their father Sean. (EM)
