It has been reported in America that Charlatan which won a division of the Arkansas Derby earlier this month has tested positive for a substance called Lidocaine and faces possible disqualification and suspension.

Lidocaine is used to aid in the suturing of wounds as it numbs the area but is banned for horse racing because it can mask lameness in unsound animals.

A 'B sample' will also have to test positive before a sanction is imposed on the horse or its connections but a first offence for the drug will mean automatic disqualification for the horse from the race and a suspension from competing of between 15 and 60 days.

Charlatan, trained by Bob Baffert, is a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby in September and was also expected to compete in the first leg of the American Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes in New York on June 20.

Baffert who won both divisions of the Arkansas Derby is looking to win the Kentucky Derby for a record equaling sixth time having previously been successful with Justify (2018), American Pharoah (2015), War Emblem (2002), Real Quest (1998) and Silver Charm (1997).
