Dermot Weld's horses are in fine fettle and the trainer supplied Ann Lambe, wife of Rite Of Passage's owner Ronan Lambe, with a winner when Storm Lightning won the opening Tote Pick Six Apprentice Handicap.

Ridden by Weld's apprentice Leigh Roche, the son of Exceed And Excel moved to the front over two furlongs out before staying on well inside the final furlong.

Weld was not present for the win but Roche did state Storm Lightning didn't stay the seven furlongs the last day and it's very heavy ground out there and he just held on. He is an improving sort.”
